Chewy Pecan & Maple Puppy Chow with soft and chewy raisins and crunchy cashews is a fun and non-traditional way to enjoy cereal.
Growing up, one of my all-time favorite cereals was Honey Bunches of Oats. With the crunchy oat clusters, crispy flakes, and honey flavor, each bite was tasty, full of texture, and unique. When I heard of the launch of the new flavor, Honey Bunches of Oats Pecan & Maple Brown Sugar, I was over the moon excited and almost immediately headed to Walmart to pick up a box.
As I was browsing the cereal aisle (it’s a really fun aisle!), I also picked up a bag of Malt-O-Meal’s Cookies & Cream bagged cereal (another one of my childhood favorites). I love the different varieties offered by Malt-O-Meal like French Toasters and Fruity Stars. And, with their Love it or it is free guarantee, you have nothing to lose!
Once I got home, I helped myself to a healthy handful of Honey Bunches of Oats Pecan & Maple Brown Sugar. It was super tasty! It had all the goodness as the original, but with added crunch from pecans and a punch of brown sugar and maple flavors. So delicious!
As I was crunching away, my mind was coming up with other ways to enjoy the cereal. Sure, I could have easily visited POST’s Pinterest account, but why do things the easy way when you can do things the hard way (sigh, such is life)? In the end, I came up with this Chewy Pecan & Maple Puppy Chow, which is the important thing.
I combined Honey Bunches of Oats Pecan & Maple Brown Sugar with melted butter and marshmallows to make bite-sized marshmallow treats. Then, I tossed them with soft and chewy raisins and crunchy cashews. The result is this Chewy Pecan & Maple Puppy Chow, which is completely addicting and satisfying.
The Chewy Pecan & Maple Puppy Chow is wonderful as an on-the-go snack, for when you’re bored while stuck in traffic, or as an alternative to popcorn on movie night.
Yields 3 cups
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 5 ounces marshmallows
- 3 cups Honey Bunches of Oats Pecan & Maple Brown Sugar cereal
- ¾ cups raisins
- ½ cup lightly salted cashews
Grease a 12.25" x 8.13" or smaller sheet pan. Set aside until ready to use.
In a large pot over low heat, heat the butter until melted. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely smooth and melted. There shouldn't be any signs of an intact marshmallow.
Stir in the cereal to coat. Transfer to the greased sheet pan and using damp hands, press the cereal down to form a compact sheet. Set aside to cool completely.
Transfer the marshmallow cereal sheet to a cutting board and cut into ½-inch squares using a sharp knife. Transfer to a large bowl and add the raisins and cashews. Toss together to combine.
